I've been curious lately about how much we are reliant on computers and technology and if that takes away a little of the artistic nuances that make our industry special and hopefully pertinent in the future. I've been desperately trying to tread water in this ever changing sea of technology. I can't seem to catch up in this fast paced world of social media (I sound like I'm a hundred years old). Truly I'm a woman in denial. My husband would tell you that I am someone who should have grown up in the 20's and 30's. My design aethetic, my music choices, my "formality in things" etc.
But, in order to survive in this designer eat designer world, I've got to keep up. I'm moving forward. The ladies I used to work with would be shocked to know I did the above computer generated floor plan (Yes girls, I did that...I know it's basic, but if you worked with me, you know I couldn't do ANYTHING on cad). Give me a sharpie pen and a piece of paper and I'll go to town, but computer drafting makes me nauseous.
Hopefully you will participate in my little "social" experiment. And please...be honest. I want to know the road I need to take, or if I can take a step backwards because it's worth it. Maybe by next year I will be "tweeting" you all.

I like both but I think the computer generated one is easier to read. The hand drawn one looks pretty though. For me, I suppose I rather have the more practical one that is easier to read. By the way, I have a project for you. Maybe you could come over next week and check it out? ~Carrie

ReplyDeleteOh - I am like you with regard to appreciating the art in the hand drawing. Really, if I were the client, whatever was easiest for you to work off of is what I would like, since I will change my mind 100 times.

The hand drawn version is better, but it is only possible if you have the skill to do it.

A lot of people don't have the skill to do what comes natural for you to do, so they use a computer program.
Keep on drawing!
PS - You might want to reduce the size of your printing in relation to the drawing, to make it more readable.
I so appreciate the beauty and skill of the hand drawn...I was right there with you when we both learned it! When I was recently at the archives at Herman Miller I was told a story of students that came through and didn't understand it was an original full scale drawing of one the classic pieces as the students only knew how to draw through computer drawing. Sad, but true. I love it yet it hand drawing may only be suitable as an art form, instead of a practical skill as many no longer relate to it. Proud of your computer skills. Can't wait to see Sydney's room!

I like the detail of the hand drawing for the items in the room but would prefer the typing for readability (since I'm over 40 and have to squint)! xoxo I think you are so talented!
